Millennium Restaurant on Oliver Plunkett Street in Mullingar is Osman Kocadag’s second eaterie in Westmeath, the other being his restaurant of the same name in Moate. On arrival at lunchtime, on a miserable, wild afternoon, the restaurant promises a lot from its stylish exterior to bright pastel, cream, red and soft wood combinations. It is a comfortable restaurant with upbeat eclectic music running a loop with enough room to simultaneously be attractive to a couple looking for a quiet table or a family relaxing at a get-together. It is also a buffer to the raging storm outside.

McGinns on the Quay, Dock Road, Galway

Last week I visited McGinns on the Docks (previously Sheridan’s) to see what the new owners are serving in that lovely room upstairs overlooking the dockside area. The first thing I noticed is that it is now also an exhibition area and currently features some stunning limited edition framed photos by Joe Geoghegan of scenes from the Volvo Ocean Race. They are quite spectacular, well framed and mounted. In fact from any small viewing distance they look like paintings. There is also an exhibition by six local Galway photographers downstairs. I understand this will be a venue for further exhibitions.

Athlone IT student crowned Ireland’s Top Student Chef 2011

Daniel Skukalek of AIT has been crowned the 2011 Knorr Student Chef of the Year at the competition’s final held in Limerick Institute of Technology. Now in its 14th year, the competition recognises outstanding talent from around Ireland’s catering colleges. Previous winners have gone on to work in some of Ireland and Europe’s top restaurants.
